A Handy Travel Checklist

When planning a trip, with so many things to think about, it’s certainly possible to forget a few items. We’ve put together a handy checklist so you’re less likely to forget what’s important.

1. Visas and Passport
Always keep your passport current and up-to-date. Make certain you’ve obtained any visas that are required for the countries you plan to visit.

2. Don’t Forget Your Tickets- Plane, Bus, Train, etc.
Even if you have e-tickets, printing them out, including any airline tickets, can be a good idea. At the very least, you’ll want to have the information available on your laptop, tablet or cell phone. By doing that you’ll have your itinerary and other important information readily available should it be required.

3. Hotel Reservations and/or Vouchers
Once again, even if you made your reservations online, be certain to have all the accommodation information and confirmations with you.

4. International Medical Travel Insurance
Be absolutely sure that you take your travel insurance documentation with you. You don’t want to find yourself in a situation where you need that documentation only to realize that you left them at home.

5. Available Cash
It’s common now for most travelers to use credit and/or debit cards. Some of us still carry a few travelers checks with us, as well. Having access to local currency is a wise move, too. Make an effort to obtain some of the local currency before you travel so you can get the best exchange rate.

6. Important Contact Information
If you used a travel agent, you should have their phone numbers with you. Also, ask for any information they have for contacts in your destination country.

It’s also smart to have the necessary contact information for your credit cards and banks just in case you lose your cards, or they are stolen.

7. What You Should Have in Your Carry-On Luggage
We’ve all had it happen to us – lost luggage. It’s unsettling enough to have to deal with this, but arriving at your hotel without your toothbrush or deodorant can be really annoying.

A few hotels will have little toiletries packages available for their guests, but most don’t.

Quick Note: Make sure you keep to the size guidelines set by the airlines.

8. Cellular Phone
If you want to stay in touch, and have others be able to contact you, consider taking your mobile phone with you. Ask your service provider about coverage where you’re going and about any roaming charges.

9. Speaking a Foreign Tongue
A “universal translator” like those used in Star Trek would sure be nice. However, there are many advanced devices available right now. Or, you can use a low-tech version – the ever-faithful phrase book.

10. Prescription Drugs and Vaccinations
Prior to your trip, determine if there are any vaccinations required for your destination country. If there are – get them!

Be sure to take essential medications with you on your trip. Also, have the doctor’s prescription should any of these medications be questioned. Some countries can impose pretty harsh penalties if they suspect you of trying to smuggle in controlled substances.

11. Resist the Urge to Over-Pack
Try to stick to the essential like a swimsuit, shorts, t-shirts, some dress clothes, dress shoes and walking shoes. Choose items that you can mix and match to help prevent over-packing.

12. Take Along Some Reading Material
If your trip includes long periods on planes, trains, ships, etc. then make sure you bring along some reading material – books, magazines, crossword puzzles and more.

This checklist was designed to help you have a stress-free trip.
